Swim with whale sharks in Djibouti: the complete 2026-2027 guide

Every winter, juvenile whale sharks gather to feed in Arta Bay. From November to February, Djibouti is one of the few places in the world where you can snorkel a few metres from the largest fish on the planet.

1. When to see whale sharks

The season runs from November to February. December and January usually bring the best conditions: flat sea, 10 to 20 m visibility and water around 26–28 °C. Outside the season the sharks leave the gulf — from March to October, choose a Moucha Island day trip instead.

2. What the day looks like

Departure from Djibouti City around 7 am, then 45 minutes to 1 h 15 of navigation to the plankton areas of Arta Bay. When a shark is spotted, the captain slows down and small groups of 2 to 3 swimmers enter the water with the guide. Juveniles usually measure 4 to 8 metres and move slowly while filtering water. Expect 1 to 4 swims depending on activity.

3. Price and booking

The whale shark trip is sold as a private boat only, from 60,000 DJF (~$338) for the whole group depending on boat capacity. Split between friends, the cost per person drops quickly. Prices in dollars use the fixed official rate 1 USD = 177.72 DJF; payment is made in Djibouti francs (cash, D-Money or Waafi).
