2. When to dive

The ideal window is October to April: flat sea, air at 25-30 °C, water at 26-28 °C and 15 to 20 metres of visibility. Juvenile whale sharks gather in Arta Bay from 1 November to the end of February. From May to September, heat up to 45 °C and monsoon winds make crossings less comfortable, though early-morning departures still run.

3. The dive sites

  • Moucha & Maskali islands — a marine reserve since 1980, with a shallow coral platform perfect for snorkeling.
  • Arta Bay — winter whale shark gathering, snorkel only.
  • Ghoubbet-el-Kharab — volcanic wall with strong currents, for experienced divers.
  • Sable Blanc & Khor Ambado — beaches with fringing reefs, easy shore snorkeling.

4. Prices and booking

Prices are set by the local operators, with no hidden fees: you book online and pay the operator once the trip is confirmed. Moucha Island is the only shared departure (Fridays); other sea trips are booked as a private boat, so the cost can be split between everyone on board.

5. Frequently asked questions

How much does diving in Djibouti cost in 2026?
Sea trips are sold by the day. A private boat starts at 60,000 DJF for the whole group (snorkeling, whale sharks in season, Sable Blanc beach, Khor Ambado). Moucha Island is the only shared trip, at 6,000 DJF per person on Fridays. The line-fishing trip to the islands costs 45,000 DJF for the boat.
When is the best time to dive in Djibouti?
From October to April: flat sea, water at 26-28 °C and 15 to 20 metres of visibility. Whale sharks gather in Arta Bay from 1 November to the end of February. Between May and September temperatures can exceed 45 °C and the sea gets choppy.
Can you swim with whale sharks in Djibouti?
Yes, with mask, snorkel and fins only — scuba diving with whale sharks is not allowed. Boats leave Djibouti City for Arta Bay and trips can be booked from 1 November to the end of February, when juvenile whale sharks are present.
Do I need a diving certification?
Not for snorkeling: the Moucha Island lagoon is shallow and suitable for beginners and accompanied children. For scuba diving, centres ask for an Open Water certification or equivalent; a first dive is possible with an instructor.
What will I see underwater?
Living coral reefs, parrotfish, clownfish, stingrays, moray eels, green turtles and, in season, whale sharks. The Ghoubbet-el-Kharab, at the far end of the gulf, has a volcanic wall popular with experienced divers.
How do I get to the dive sites?
All trips leave from Djibouti City by boat, with pick-up arranged when you book. Moucha Island is a 30 to 45 minute crossing; Arta Bay and Sable Blanc take about an hour.
