Getting there

The 4x4 leaves Djibouti City at 8:00 am and heads south-west via Dikhil, then follows a long track across the plains. Count 5 to 6 hours of driving. The price includes the 4x4, the driver-guide and fuel.

Sunset, camp night and sunrise

You arrive for sunset over the chimneys, sleep in a traditional Afar camp (10,000 DJF (~$56) per person, paid on site; dinner and breakfast are included in this price), and wake up for sunrise, when steam rises from the chimneys.

When to go

October to April is best, especially December–January. Avoid June to August, when heat is extreme.

What is the camp like?
